There’s been a bit of buzz on the web around this time of year.. Well for starters Microsoft had their PDC taking place in LA which always ensure that one or more exciting news is making headways.
This year’s keynote presentations (Keynote 2), revolved around three screens (desktop, phone and TV) and all of them talking to the cloud. Microsoft announced launch of Windows Azure, their cloud computing platform that offer customers a unique application hosting environment that includes Os, database and messaging apps.
Developers also get a consistent development environment for developing applications for Azure with VS2010 as Azure project templates are not part of VS2010.
One of the other major news at PDC was IE9, it seems to me that guys in Redmond are planning to put lot more emphasis on their browser as they understand that market is shifting towards cloud computing.
There are some initial video on channel 9 about IE9 that show how a browser will start utilising GPU to render graphics.
Microsoft also announced Sliverlight 4 (now supports Google Chrome). Silverlight is also going to play a very important role in maintaining the User Experience not only for customer facing applications but also for LOB applications.
While all this was happening in LA Google have come out with more details on their infamous OS in cloud – Chrome OS.
According to Google blog post
Chrome is all about the web. All apps are web apps. The entire experience takes place within the browser and there are no conventional desktop applications. This means users do not have to deal with installing, managing and updating programs.
Since it is an open-source project I would expect that the rate of development and new rollouts/updates is going to be significantly faster. Chrome OS is expected to be ready by the end of next year. You can sign up here for updates.
Here is a short video that explains bit more about Google Chrome OS.
